You Had Me at Hola ~ Alexis Daria

You Had Me at Hola

Rating: 4/5

Romance of romances, this sexy telenovela-esque book is a romance between two latinx celebrities. Sex is right there on the page, so if you’re a more subtle romance reader, this book will probably not be for you. More than that, it’s a story about the walls we build to protect ourselves, that we think will keep us safe but really just keep others out. It’s a story about family, and the sacrifices we are willing to make for our family, the boundaries we sometimes have to push back in order to keep ourselves sane. It’s a story about how hard it can be for Latinx TV stars to make it big in the industry, and what lengths they’re willing to go to get there.

I really liked this book, but I didn’t fall in love with it. The romance was enjoyable, the tropes were a little whiney. I’m not a big fan of the kind of character development where the character runs into the same wall over and over again until finally realizing that they could do it a different way. Is it believable/relatable? Yes. Is it enjoyable to read? Not so much. Both Jasmine and Ashton fall into this trope in more ways than one.

On the other hand, it was gratifying to read the parallels between the script they were filming and their unfolding feelings towards each other. Just as the characters on set would get closer together and shy away because of their past, so would Jasmine and Ashton. They definitely became closer through filming, and it’s clear that much like their characters, they couldn’t stay away from each other even if they tried.
